The place

At the end of the southern side of Mount Circeo, the rock breaks off in a steep drop to the sea. Here there is a huge sheer cliff whose walls plunge from a height of a full 400 metres. The very wide joint in the rock opens near the sea into small coves. On the handsome reddish-grey walls grows a rich Mediterranean scrub: clumps of dwarf palms growing in inlets and cracks in the rock, along with juniper and rosemary bushes. The area is also home to plenty of wildlife, especially birds that use the site for wintering and nesting. In the past the Precipizio was watched over from above by Torre Moresca, which, standing at the edge of the cove, kept an eye out for attacks in the area below.

Curiosities

Did you know?

A little gem to share with your travel companions.

Near the Precipizio you can admire the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) in flight: such a cliff is its ideal nesting place. Its Italian name (falco pellegrino) refers to the dark patch on its head, which recalls a pilgrim’s hood. It is a truly fast bird that can reach 320 km/h in a dive.
