Circeo National Park · UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The sorceress’s promontory

Five hundred and forty-one metres of limestone on the Tyrrhenian, twenty-two kilometres of dune, four brackish lakes and the most extensive lowland forest in Europe. All within thirty kilometres of coast.

Where we are

An island that is no longer an island

When the Pontine plain was still marsh, the Circeo appeared detached from the mainland: an isolated block of rock the ancients identified with Aeaea, the island of the sorceress Circe. The reclamation of the 1930s changed the geography, not the substance — the promontory remains an anomaly, a relief rising from a perfectly flat plain and concentrating within a few square kilometres environments that elsewhere lie hundreds of kilometres apart.

That compression is what makes the territory extraordinary. In a single day you can climb a summit with a view of the Pontine archipelago, walk in a lowland forest that survived the drainage, watch flamingos on a brackish lake and swim beneath a white limestone cliff.
