Submerged statue on the seabed off the Circeo promontory, a popular destination for divers who explore the protected coast of the National Park, rich in posidonia meadows and a particularly varied marine life thanks to the environmental protection of the area.
For years now, a visit to the statue of the Christ of the Abyss has been an unmissable tradition for many divers at the Circeo. This destination of pilgrimage lies a full 18 metres deep off the San Felice marina, where on 25 April 1992 the sculpture was positioned and sunk. During a heartfelt public ceremony on the harbour square, Bishop Domenico Pecile blessed the Christ, and the ceremony is repeated every year on Liberation Day with a wreath of flowers dropped into the sea near the sculpture.
The bronze statue is anchored to the seabed by a reinforced concrete base one metre high and weighing over three thousand kilos. The site is marked by a buoy, and fishing and anchoring are forbidden there.
Following this example, on 5 September 2010 a bronze work called “The Face of Christ”, conceived and made by the artist Ignazio Colagrossi, was sunk on the opposite side of the promontory (near the Grotta delle Capre).
