In the heart of Borgo Montenero stands one of the public buildings constructed in the 1930s as part of the founding of the rural villages of the Agro Pontino.
During the Fascist period the whole Agro Pontino saw the construction of new towns and “service villages”. Among them is Borgo Montenero, built at the same time as Pontinia between 1934 and 1935. The location was ideal, next to the town of San Felice and close to the well-connected Via Appia. Its layout is square, divided in turn into three rectangles. At the far end stands the Littorio tower in the shape of a fasces, which also served as a water tank. Since then the village has remained unchanged. For all the families who came to reclaim the area, mainly from Friuli, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, various buildings for social life were built, such as the school, the church and the after-work club. All reclamation activities had to be reported to the ONC, the “Opera Nazionale Combattenti” (National Veterans’ Organisation). The building belongs to the Rationalist architectural language that characterised the planning of the new villages of the Agro Pontino in the 1930s.
The building, opposite the main structures such as the school and above all the church, was the focal point of social activities. Of the historic function of this building, now home to several local families, only the word “VINCERE” (“TO WIN”) moulded on the front wall remains.
