Hiking route on the island of Zannone, starting from the Caletta del Varo and ending at the Capo Negro Lighthouse. The island can be reached by boat from Ponza; boats land at Varo without being able to stay.
From the little cove a stepped path through Mediterranean scrub leads to the former Hunting Lodge, currently closed. Nearby are the remains of the Benedictine monastery, which the Park says was built in 504 and abandoned about three centuries later because of raids by Saracen pirates. Near the convent, a clearing offers the chance to spot mouflons, introduced to the island in the last century for hunting.
The route continues towards Monte Pellegrino, a viewpoint overlooking Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene. Shortly after the monastery the trail descends the other side and enters the Cavone del Lauro wood, with large holm oaks, strawberry trees, tree heath and phillyrea, ending at the Capo Negro Lighthouse. The return is along the same route.
