Fountain with the distinctive popular name ‘Asso di coppe’ (Ace of Cups), linked to oral tradition and the minor place names of San Felice Circeo, one of the many curious names dotting the historic centre that often hold local memories and anecdotes now hard to reconstruct precisely.
The fountain called Asso di Coppe now stands in the southern part of Piazzale San Francesco, where it was placed in 1957. It takes its name from its shape, which recalls the playing card known as the Ace of Cups, and was designed after an ancient and famous 17th-century fountain. Its twin, in Provençal style, stands in the centre of Saint-Paul-de-Vence in France, in the square called, appropriately, “Place de la Grande Fontaine”, another popular tourist destination, especially for those heading to the enchanting Côte d’Azur.
